The Founding of My Territory
November 04, 2024
After about a year or two of pondering and months of research later, I finally made my own website that I call my own. I've been thinking about making one from time to time for at most two years now, and it was only when I found about the "indie web" (or whatever it was called when I found out about it) was when I got the motivation to make my own website.
I've looked up a lot of other indie web hosting providers, like Nekoweb, Bear, and a bunch of others until I decided to go with Neocities. It took about a month or two to make that decision because I thought of what I will be needing, what will I put in the website, and if a particular restriction or limitation will hinder me (I found Neocities' tiered list of features out of the way that it took me a while to find it, so here's that table for your convienience).
Speaking of looking up stuff, these resources should come in handy for those who are also looking into making their own small, personal websites: [1], [2], [3].
I knew that I wanted to create the website from scratch with a text editor like VSCode, and that the website wouldn't be so simple. With those in mind, I got to go with ones that does not have their own scheme or structure that users should follow. That's partly how I ended up with Neocities as the hosting provider for my website. The other part is that I was fed up with being indecisive that I just went with it. That's not to say that Neocities is mid; it's actually a pretty solid choice for those who are looking to make a small, personal website that they can call their own. I just wanted to make my website a reality, and Neocities was one of my top picks that I ended up choosing it.
It's not gonna have all that much bells and whistles like the other small websites, at least not in the beginning, but I just want enough to show off a bit about myself, what I do, and what I could do. For starters, have you noticed that the little message beneath the title of the website changes when you reload or go to another page? You can try it right now if you want (then come back after). It also showcases my interests if you could catch the references, or just something I thought.
Another thing I want to do is to make posts like this! I want an outlet of ideas and experiences that I want to put out on the internet. Sure, I can just sign up to a social media website and call it a day, but that's not what I want. I've heard about the wonders of past social media, ones where you could design and actually make your little corner your own. I want something like that as well. Right now, I don't have a proper process of creating these posts yet. If I made any changes to the layout of the website, the amount of pages I'd have to update will increase to the point of absurdity. I tried experimenting with using javascript to update the layout, but I hit a brick wall. I'll look into static site generators a bit more. Probs that will give me the ticket.
Even after I get the whole post future-proofing situation sorted, there's still more that I want to do more with the site. One of the things I want to add are dedicated pages for the games I've been involved in, with anecdotes and pieces about the development of each game in my point of view as the programmer. I'm also planning on creating a page where you get to download my Counter-Strike 2 demos so you can watch the matches I streamed or my off-stream matches that I found interesting. Aside from adding stuff to my website, I should also fix some errors in the site (the footer being one of them).
Anyways, there's still a lot more to be done. I got more plans in store for this site, in due time they will be materialized. I could only list so much before I spill everything I'd like to do in this site. Gotta keep the suspense and surprise somehow. Right now, I need to focus on our thesis game since the defense for the game is coming up next week.
For now though, you can catch me on Twitch every Saturdays 9:00PM (GMT +08:00). I played Counter-Strike 2 on the last stream, of which you can watch in its entirety here! Next stream I'll be playing some Arsenal (a Roblox FPS game where you kill to progress into another weapon and be the first to kill with the last weapon) and make some opponents cry as I backstab them into weapon regression (AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA). I might also make some proper videos for entertainment, perhaps turn some of my posts into videos too, on my primary channel as well. Sign-offs are not my strongest suits, so I'll be seeing you then!
